what is montessori?

At its heart, Montessori is a holistic and child-led approach to learning. It is less about teaching the child, and more about allowing the child the space and freedom to learn through a programme of pre-selected activities. This eradicates the need to control and berate the child and allows children to follow their natural instincts. No more stressed out shouty parenting and lots more actively engaged learners. The result is a more content and happier household – most of the time at least!

Dr Montessori was the first woman to graduate from the university of Rome medical school and was a doctor first before moving into education. She established schools for disadvantaged children and is famous for approaching their education as a scientist, using her classroom as a laboratory – her mission being to observe the behaviour of children and develop ways to help them achieve their full potential.

What she saw was that children learn best when they are given the freedom to do, and what followed was a range of pioneering teachings, practices, and valuable resources that enabled them to ‘do’ in a safe and carefully considered environment.

Whilst that might read like a history lesson, there is nothing old fashioned about the Montessori approach, far from it.

In fact, time and time again, the Montessori style has been applied to enrich and empower children all over the world.

Here at Monty’s Play Hub, we take everything we know and love about Montessori and combine that with lived experience and modern life.

We truly believe that when kids are free to explore, they reach their social, emotional and physical milestones naturally and with ease.
